Putting on a scope

Post by leader »

I have always had a gunsmith top my rifles with optics and go through them.
Don't know why but always have.
Generally because I use the same set up once I like it for ever.
That being said, I just got a new to me mountain rifle and want to swap a scope from my "go to" over the last few years.
Anything I should I know or is it as simple as I think.
The only thing that worries me is getting it set to far back and first shot crack my eye open.

leader, there are some really good videos on YouTube about mounting a scope, including setting the proper eye relief. Here is one:

Here's a few other scope mounting videos:

I have always loosely mounted the scope in the rings first. Just enough that I can move it around by hand. Shoulder the rifle as you normally would and see what kind of sight picture you have. Adjust scope so it looks good to you and tighten down. I do it like this because everyone holds a rifle just a bit differently. Doing it this way means the scope alignment is set for me because it matches my hold. Never had any issues doing it this way.

This plus I bought a torque wrench and found out I had been over torqueing.

I need to get a scope mounted on my sons 243. I may try to mount this one myself.

If your gonna hunt in cold weather, make sure to put on a heavy coat to compensate for your eye relief.

I made my own alignment bar set. Two turned aluminum bars with reamed holes, and a precision ground steel dowel that slides between them. Works great. You have to be pretty much right on the money for the dowel to start in the other rod.
