Rifle suggestions..
Rifle suggestions..
Before I put much effort into this, figure I will ask for info here first.
My brother contacted me last night....looking for a rifle. I dont have much to go on, other than what he told me. Hes not a gun nut, so top of the line stuff probably isnt what hes looking for.
His criteria...
Bolt action
30/06
10 rnd detachable mag....or easily modified to accept 10 rnd mags.
Oh.....and needs to be something that isnt extinct right now.... something he can find.
Im trying to convince him 308 is very close, and much more available right now, but we shall see.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Rifle suggestions..
30/06 is a good all around rifle. I have killed a lot of deer with one. The last several years I have used my 270WSM.

Re: Rifle suggestions..
Tell him to find the ammo first. I've not seen 30-06 on the shelf in a couple years. I also know of no 10 rd 30-06 platforms except the aftermarket mags for the remington 742. He should just get a .308 AR from Palmetto State if he feels he needs more than the 5 rounds a lower end bolt gun holds. Yes there are 10+ capacity bolt guns but they will all cost more than a Palmetto .308 AR.

Re: Rifle suggestions..
That is my opinion. 308 ammo on every walmart shelf in America. Performance difference is negligible, and many more options that meet his criteria are available in 308.....bolt with 10 rnd detachable mag!Shane37110 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 7:06 am Tell him to find the ammo first. I agree. Im not sure what hes looking for. Just received the vague text last night. Ive text him this morning, but he lives in Idaho... Time diff, I guess.Shane37110 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 7:11 amSee my edit aboveJethro wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 7:09 amThat is my opinion. 308 ammo on every walmart shelf in America. Re: Rifle suggestions..
Budget? I might have a 300wm and plenty of ammo if he’s interested
Re: Rifle suggestions..
I asked. No exact amount mentioned. Just said..."quality". His idea of quality isnt the same as mine though. Not being a gun nut, he doesn't realize that can get into some serious $$$.
I would venture to guess....less than a grand....the more less, the better...

Re: Rifle suggestions..
That ought to tell someone something!!! 308 not popular as 30-06 heck get him a real gun in 7mm magnum . Ruger m77 works . Don't know if a 10 round clip can be made to work for the M77 though but heck as accurate as the 7mm is you won't need any more roundsJethro wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 7:09 amThat is my opinion. 308 ammo on every walmart shelf in America. Re: Rifle suggestions..
Update.....
Took Shane's advice....suggested ar10 in 308. He finally answered.....thats more what hes looking for. Not necessarily for hunting.....maybe just getting prepared. Maybe he suspects something...
Btw, hes ex military....but his gun while in service, was the M109 Paladin...
Not much for small arms...
Another update....Now hes found a PTR 91....and likes.
Anyone know of any good or bad about them?

Re: Rifle suggestions..
If he's looking for shtf then he may as well go 5.56 caliber AR
Re: Rifle suggestions..
Kind of my thoughts, now that ive figured out what hes looking for...and why.Shane37110 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 10:51 am If he's looking for shtf then he may as well go 5.56 caliber AR
Re: Rifle suggestions..
Wasn’t Savage making 1 that took AR mags?
Re: Rifle suggestions..
Was thinking they made it in several calibers with 10 round mags
