Sighting in a rifle scope??

Post by Tngrizzly_ »

I am needing to sight a scope that I just got this year, so my question is. I am shooting a rem 700 30/06.

If I sight it in at 25 yard's, is it going to be on at 100 yards?
If so, should I put it a inch high?

I really don’t get this logic. Get it out and shoot! Put it an inch high at 25 and I doubt you touch the paper at 100.

Just something I always heard so I asked. I don't have a place to shoot 100 yards close by, but I can shoot up to 50 here.

There’s no replacement to actually sighting it in. And why at 100, cause everything works at 100. 1/4” clicks. Parallax. I would take a 50 yard zero before I’d take a 25, or even an inch high at 25. I shoot a ton of rifles. Usually sight in multiple rifles every year for various friends and family and the one thing I’ve found most of the time you end up shooting over the target if you’re “zero’d” or high at 25 yards. Anymore I set a target at 35-40 yards and get to an inch low at that range. Last time I done this I was an inch high at 100. It doesn’t always work out that way, but I take them to 100 before I’m satisfied.

I am going to agree with Jason. To many variables for anyone to even try to guess that. Something as simple as the height of scope above the bore will change it. Bullet weight/speed will also effect it. I have heard that just a hair low at 50 will put you an inch or so high at 100, but I dont trust that. My guess is, if on or high at 25, you will be off the paper at 100....but that's just a guess.

Isn't this range up your way?

According to Strelok ballistic app, a 30-06 with a slow 165 grain bullet will be about 4 moa low at 25 yards with a 100 yard zero.

This. If ALL I had was 25 yards to sight in on before I could hunt, then I would get it to 1" LOW at 25 yards. In theory you would be about an inch high at 100 from there.
[Image We score trophies, but every hunt is, to some extent, a way of measuring ourselves.
