Ohio-Gotta Make it Count

Post by JonW »

Since my TN season was pretty much trashed this year, I'm REALLY looking forward to Ohio firearm season next week. I hate that limit dropped (AGAIN) to two, but it's a great week and fun hunt.

If anybody wants I'll try to post updates every day or two.

Thanks, WG. The last two years have been very good to me, so my hopes are high.

If you're watching I'll try to check in every day.

Yeppers, keep us up to date and post a pic or three or four or five or more. Any way have a safe and enjoyable hunt.
I`m just here for the girl`s wet teeshirt and mud wrestling contest.

SkunkApe/JonW is me. I guess I had trouble logging on for some reason and has two names. This one came up on Tapatalk and since I'm on the road I'll use it and delete one when I get home.

Hunter Drew and I are almost to camp. Hate getting there this late but we got drawn for LBL. Weather looks good and wind is right for a stand I think I can catch them crossing when neighbors start driving them tomorrow.

We missed seeing it last night by an hour or so, but a young man killed a hoss of a 9-pointer last night with archery equipment! Pics are hard to judge in a truck but it wouldn't shock me if it's mid-upper 130s.

Ok, pics can be deceiving. The 9 pointer is actually in the mid 150s.

A heavy, short tined 10 point was killed this afternoon. Won't score as well but impressive and mature.

Good week so far!

Sorry, service was absolutely terrible this year for some reason. Other than a stand I hunted on an all-day sit on top of a hill, it was very spotty at best and didn't work in barn or camp house.

I saw decent buck activity from the beginning. I gave this guy a pass since another hunter took a pic with his cell phone instead of shooting him. I actually think I saw him twice.

On Wed afternoon I was running out of time. I had planned to hang my stand on top of a hill over a big overgrown field I've never hunted. Drew dropped me at the bottom of the hill where I dropped my climber earlier and encouraged me to just stay there, so I did. I was overlooking a narrow power line with some visibility in the woods on each side.

I caught this guy slipping through the woods just before dark. I could see he looked like a 10, so I stopped him. When he looked at me I saw he was outside his ears and shoot.

The split brows gives him 11 scorable with what would have been the 12th well short. Just shy of 17" inside. Definitely not huge by Ohio standards, but I try not to beat myself up over my only buck this year. I caped out the head, removed skull plate to clean it, and will shoulder mount him myself.

I drove back to TN yesterday and am getting a couple of days in the stand I wasn't counting on before heading to WI (for work) on Monday.

Nice buck!!
