Yellow Perch

Post by caretaker »

Been catching a few of these the last couple of years. I was told by a wildlife official that they are good eating. Only problem with that is the ones I caught wernt much bigger than the minnows I. was using. Do they or can they attain any size?

I've caught them below Guntersvile dam that we around 8" never caught enough though to make a meal only on them though. Always caught one or 2 when we would go sauger fishing.

Guntersville is the only place around here that I've caught them that I remember. I don't think I've caught more than 3 or 4 in a trip and they usually don't have much size. Maybe 6 inches or a little bigger for the biggest ones I've caught.

Caught 15 Thursday, water was 41 degrees. Been waiting for a little warmer water. Gonna be waiting a little longer.

What temperature do you prefer to fish them in?

They seem to get active around 43-44 degrees. By that I mean slowly moving baits, the other day I could only get bit by being dead still. I think I read somewhere that they go into pre-spawn around 46.

I'm hoping to get after them this year.

Going after them tomorrow, water is STILL 41 degrees. I bought the smallest minnows they had, but still too big. Better than no bait at all, maybe a crappie or largemouth for a bonus.

Good luck! Post up some pics if you get any. I got my kayak out the other day and started getting it ready. I'm looking forward to trying some fishing out of it this year.
