If...

Post by MUP »

Let's say that I kill the dominant buck in my area, and he's been chasing/tending a hot doe. Will that doe obviously get bred by one of the younger satellite bucks that he's been fending off her, or will she hold out for another dominant buck for a while? I guess I'm asking is it first come first served or will a doe actually wait and try to pick the best genetics from a dominant buck, or is she just a doe ho and take whatever comes along? :D

Good question. I don't know but hopefully someone smart will chime in.

I’d guess a satellite buck does more breeding than a dominant buck if he’s too busy running them off. Pretty common I believe

Kinda like how subordinate toms are just waiting for that dominant tom to busy himself breeding a hen so he can try to woo the leftovers.

Does will breed with whatever buck is tending her! They will actually breed with more than one buck when they are in heat! If there is only one dominant buck in the area and several does come into heat at the same time, then most of them will be bred by subdominant bucks since he is probably locked down with one.

I once saw a pic of a buck being "bred" by another buck, while that buck was actually breeding a doe. Not sure if it was photoshopped or not, but it sure looked real! :D
