Brass vs Steel

Post by WG Taxidermist »

This is probably a dumb question but I know people reload brass but can the steel casings be reloaded as well?

Generally speaking, no. But I do think it’s possible.

I've not heard of it, but people do reload nickel plated steel cases tho. I wouldn't think you could load them many times tho like brass cases. It would be rough on the dies for certain.

So why do they use steel casings? I'm assuming it's a cost factor. Looks to me that the steel would be hard on a gun.

It’s cost. If I’m not mistaken they make aluminum cases as well. Nickel cases are reloadable unless they’re steel underneath. Magnets will tell you but I’m not sure of any big name brass manufacturers that nickel coat steel

Cost effective for steel, and yes, it's harder on the rifle than brass for sure.
