Hole in the boat

Okay we was cutting some bolt off the old aluminum boat and I cut through it. Now there' is a 5 or 6 inch long cut and about with of a jig saw blade. So will this stuff work?

Those rods are brazing rods with a low melting point that are used with a propane torch. Take the torch and preheat the damaged area and feed the rod into the hole to fill it in. Doesn't have to be pretty, a sander or grinder will smooth out your weld.

The resulting weld is stronger than aluminum. You will need to completely remove paint to bare shiny aluminum around the area. Before and during the heating process, use a stainless steel brush to clean the area. Unlike steel, aluminum must be clean. It develops a layer of aluminum oxide during heating. This is why it must be brushed often right up until the weld rod is applied.

I bought a duck boat that had a big tear in it. I drove it to the welders and they fixed it. Best i remember it was $35. it never leaked.

I have used the rods before and they can be really tough to fill a hole, If you go that route I would put a aluminum backer plate on to help keep from melting a big hole, a mig welder and 2 minutes is a much better repair imo.

Flex seal will work but it will only last so long.

I’ve been hearing about some low temperature aluminum welding rods that you can sweat in with a propane torch. Haven’t tried them though.

The JB Weld will hold but you need to clean the area real well and apply it to both sides of the hole so it creates a through the hole bond.

I could be wrong about this, but seems like I heard that when trying to get something to bond to aluminum, you should wipe it down with vinegar. Again, dont know if that is correct.

I haven't heard that but I can see how it would help.
