The best part of the state

Post by catman529 »

West TN has big deer.... East Tn has big bears.... both are great parts of the state, but Mid TN is the best place to live in Tennessee for sure. Who agrees :D

I did until I found out I'm East TN. The dividing line between Middle and East is nowhere near a straight line. So, now I'm certain that East is better all-around.

Well I will be driving thru East Tennessee with the fam tomorrow, headed back from vacation, headed back to the best part of the state. Is there anything else noteworthy about east TN other than the scenic mountains?

Cades cove is well worth the drive. That is a must if your that close. You will love it! Its an 11 mile loop I believe. Well worth the short drive, granted you could spend all day there. You can about walk up to the deer! And there are a ton of them along with all the other wildlife there.

I've wanted to visit Cade's Cove, but it looks like a good distance off the interstate so I don't think the family would be into that idea. We're just headed home at this point...

I've hunted in all 3 areas of the state (though very little in East TN.) I wouldn't say one is better than the other as there are advantages and disadvantages to them all. East TN definitely wins in the aesthetic scenery department. West TN probably supports the higher deer populations, but the deer don't have to travel as much and lack of terrain funnels and changing water levels can be difficult in the bottoms despite these high populations. Mid TN definitely wins the turkey hunting award.

If you just want to kill deer, most of West TN and Middle TN is good to great hunting. If you have more specific goals, then you can narrow that down to a handful of more optimal counties. Some of the best trophy hunting is in areas where little hunting is allowed such as Williamson and Davidson counties. Other good trophy counties such as Fayette produce big deer, but also have pretty equal hunting pressure throughout the county. Personally, I'd jut enjoy each part of the state for what it is and, if you can travel, I'd highly recommend hunting in different parts of the state. If you've never hunted in bottomland, Hatchie bottoms will give you a run for your money as far as choosing a hunting spot when there is random deer sign everywhere and no terrain features. If you've never hunted in the mountains, you'll be amazed at the beauty of Cherokee Nt'l Forrest, yet dismayed by the relative lack of deer sign compared to the rest of the state.

Having lived in east and middle...east is better hands down, no contest. Deer hunting is much better in middle.

I have to agree I love Middle Tn., but I have a fondness for East and West. I love hunting all parts of the state.

The family farm is in West Tennessee, and I love to Bear and deer hunt in Cherokee.

West- is easier to hunt and tons of small deer.
Middle- has the biggest Deer and a good mix of terrain.
East- you have to work harder for it but they have some good deer too
