No love lost between Kroll and Woods

From James Kroll's Facebook... After almost 5 decades of being a scientist, I am growing more and more upset by the lack of quality, integrity and truthfulness in science today. I recently received an email from a fellow in Wisconsin alerting me to an article written, I guess, for the online Outdoor...

To celebrate your birthday you'll never guess what I did...

...I went to the Trump rally in Albuquerque to see the spectacle in person. Holy frijoles!

Happy b-day btw.

Aldo Leopoldo was a wise man. I love his quote... "The recreational value of game is inverse to the artificiality of its origin. Hence, the recreational value of game is inverse to the intensiveness of the system of game management which produced it." It's speaks exactly to what you are sa...

Hell....Angel Fire's absolutely gorgeous and there's an amazing microbrewery not too far outside of Toas that operates out of an old air plane hangar. It's one of my favorite stops...I'll throw in the first couple rounds of microbrews as well!

Re: So this is where the cool kids are hanging out!

Let me clarify....

I wasn't drawn for a deer tag...

...but I do have elk, bear, cougar and turkey tags burnin' a hole in my pocket.

So I'll be quite busy this fall. :)

Re: So this is where the cool kids are hanging out!

That lucky bastage has been working with one of the Native Americans from the nearby Pueblos who's been teaching him all the ins and outs of the forest. Coolest and most knowledgeable guy in the woods he ever met. Anyway, he used to think folks in the Southeast were lucky because they could trace th...

Re: Trophy state now,any horn above hair= a buck

Seeing those pictures and hearing those stories reminds me of so many instances where people will unintentionally become a lawbreaker, especially in unit L where it's common to drop multiple deer in an instant. In fact, just last year I was sitting with my son and a six pointer and doe came running ...

I hope you enjoyed 'em boys, the glory days of hunting are now behind you. I can almost guarantee 20 or 30 years from now you'll be telling your grandkids, "I remember when..." and you will be reminiscing about the good old days when hunting was fun.

I hate to tell you this Diehard...get used to it.

It pains me to see the direction things are going. Science is slowly getting forced out of resource management.

Bryan - it's too bad you don't like the flying tree rats as much as you do deer because we could get into a wonderful discussions about population dynamics. It is just as fascinating as deer dynamics. The long and short is there is no definitive answer. Unfortunately hunters and biologist alike are ...

Re: Deer stagnation or regression?

Do you want to hear something funny? The very first time I began thinking about this whole idea, I was watching an episode of Bucks of the Tecomate ( or whatever the name of the show was with Jeff Foxworthy). And yes, I was guilty of watching horn porn decades ago. However, what I truly appreciated ...

Re: Deer stagnation or regression?

I could not agree with you more Bryan. Just like I posted on Facebook, I believe there's a strong correlation between what we see you today and a well-known fact in the fisheries world. For those of you that don't know, a lake or newly formed body of water, has much more potential when it is first c...

Re: Deer stagnation or regression?

It's funny, growing up and hunting in the late 70s and early 80s, people tried to keep deer out of corn fields, heaven forbid someone actually plant them for the deer. And just so everyone knows, I am all for people using food plots to connect hunter and prey, it's when people try to sell the fact t...

Deer stagnation or regression?

I posted this on a FaceBook page to incite discussion and received some thoughtful responses. I'd like to hear the thoughts from this crowd as well. Discussion Topic: Why do hunters nowadays believe white-tailed deer "need" food plots and minerals to reach their maximum potential? If you l...

Quick question from a chemically ignorant guy...why not deep girdling? Is this not quick enough? I would think if chemical application requires multiple visits, a deep girdle, though more time consuming inititially, would be more efficient.

Yes, you did remember correctly, it can be taken up by plants. It's something we'll never get rid of but I'd recommend keeping it at bay as long as possible.

I was out for a ride the other day, took some back roads hoping to get lost, before I knew it I found myself in Bandelier National Monument. The cliff dwellings were breathtaking, transported me back in time, to a time I should've been. Spent a few talking to the park ranger about some trails I migh...

I have not seen either of those but yet but it's not surprising since both of those prefer deserty-chaparral areas. Yep...was offered a sweet deal to work with the Feds. I served my time in state govt and decided to make the leap. The main benefit is getting my foot in the door. I'd eventually love to find myself in Montana or Wyoming.
