Opening Day Observations?
I saw a spike early, just cruising on thru nonchalant, then had a doe come in, then reconnect with her twin kiddos on the other side of me. Dang that doe had to have walked straight inline with the White oak that was about 10 ft from my tree bc she popped her head around it right in my face before I knew she was anywhere near. Amazing how they can do that! Anyway, her hocks were clean white almost, so I'm not seeing any sign of pre rut yet, other than the spike my daughter got last Sat. He had darkened hocks, I guess you could say he was rutted up somewhat, for a spike. What's everybody else's observations for the opening day of ML?

The highlight of my day was around 7. Squirrel went to change trees and ended up tumbling out. The next highlight was lunch

The buck I shot was traveling with another spike.

Normally I would have let this one walk, but I have some needy friends that wanted some meat.

The doe I took Saturday morning had to be a yearling. What I can't understand is the fact that she was in an area that a buck was working. She was alone which makes me confused. As small as she was I would think she would still be with the heard. Was she coming in or just curious about the scrapes and rubs? She was small and young. At what age do the doe start breading?

I hunted hard for two days on a draw hunt, in an area that I normally have success, and caught a glimpse of one deer. Only came out of the woods for an hour and a half both days. The sign was there, but hot and windy took its toll I guess.
I sure hope this weekend is better.
Congrats to those who connected!

If she was born this year, momma might have already kicked her to the curb to breed? She could be to young to breed this early too.caretaker wrote:The doe I took Saturday morning had to be a yearling.
