Has anyone heard of a pilot program signed off on by Gov Haslam, directing the free tuition of illegals, once they receive a ged, at these schools? A friend called me last night disturbed at seeing this on the news.

MUP - I posted a lengthy response on the other site, but in short - it's not true. There is no free college tuition for illegal immigrants in Tennessee. The bill was about in-state college tuition rates for kids born in the US to illegal immigrant parents. In such cases, the kid is a US citizen by birth, but the parents are illegal immigrants.

Here's the actual 1-page bill that was signed by Haslem after passing the Senate 20-10 and the House 63-27-2.

It appears that your Senator (Janice Bowling) and Representative (Ron Travis) both voted no on SB2115/HB1929, which means they do not want kids born in the US to illegal immigrants to be entitled to in-state tuition rates at Tennessee colleges and universities. If you agree, then they represented you well. If you disagree, then you should call them and complain. In the end, they were outnumbered by Senators and Representatives who are primarily from Tennessee's larger metropolitan areas.

It would be politically difficult for Haslem to veto a bill that made it through the Tennessee Senate and House with such strong support from both Republicans and Democrats.

There is another bill being considered that would address in-state tuition rates for kids who came to the US illegally and who are attending high school in Tennessee. However, there is not enough support for this bill to pass the legislature at this time, so it has essentially been defeated for now.

The sponsor of these bills is Republican State Senator Todd Gardenhire of Chattanooga (District 10). If people live in his district and don't support his agenda to offer in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants who earn at least a B average in high school and have lived in Tennessee for five years, then they should call him and complain.

A proposal now,to allow even illegal kids in-state tuition, who have come here illegally, and are attending high school? We've already lost this battle of immigration.

I agree the battle is lost because for many years the federal government has done a half-arsed job of enforcing our immigration laws and controlling our borders. They have failed to implement a well-controlled, reasonable and efficient immigration system. As a result, it's basically a free-for-all on our southern border. More Americans should be outraged at this, but too many people don't seem to pay attention to it until illegal immigrants haved rolled into their town or neighborhood by the truckload and by then it's too late.

We have so many illegal immigrants in parts of Texas like Dallas that people are numb to it. Sadly, it's become the norm.

All the talk, or should I say action, on the part of our reps to pass laws pertaining to the catering to of ALREADY ILLEGAL immigrants is a huge white flag in the face of any sort of immigration "reform". I'm sick at the thought of it.

The writing is on the wall how all of this will play out. Everywhere you go, signs, menus, billboards, etc. have Spanish as well as English. They have been catered to for a while and getting worse.
