Anyone with a kid just starting to hunt?

Post by Jethro »

Specifically, Im looking for an older (teen) kid. Probably sounds awful, but let me explain.
As ive gotten older, Ive become a bit of a snob when it comes to gear... specifically knives. Im looking for an unbiased mind.
Ive ran across a small folding knife that looks like it would be awesome for small and large game. Its a cheap knife from china, but it literally has hundreds of 4-5 star reviews online. Ive ordered 2 of them (not here yet) and I want someone not really accustomed to high-end knives, to take one of them, use it through the season....small and large game, then give me their thoughts/opinions on it. Ive learned that when reading reviews, it really depends on what the reviewer is accustomed to as to the value of the review. I will be using the other one. I want to see how our opinions differ or agree.
If an unbiased teen isnt available, I will consider an adult to help out with this.
Thanks for any and all help.

I have zero affiliation with either the knife maker or the place I ordered them from. This is just for my own curiosity.
Again, thanks.

Oh yeah, and they can keep the knife.

I’ll talk to his Dad. I invited them on here but I’m not sure if they joined.

Please let me know what you find out.
The knives arrived yesterday. Already, I can tell some discrepancy in a lot of the reviews I read. Many said theirs arrived "razor sharp". These, not so much. They are sharp, but not razor sharp. The blade material is pretty thick for a folder, and the edge is pretty steep. I ran some 1200 grit across them to try to polish them up a little.....didnt help much. At least on the one I review, I will probably thin down the edge some....see if that helps. The blade steel is T10 (Chinese version of 1095 (or close)) so it should be pretty good. I will post some pics in a little bit...still trying to get my daily coffee fix.
Let me know...

Ok....got a couple pics.
The knife is a Rough Ryder Bow Trapper. Yes, it Chinese, but this one looks interesting to me. It has T10 blade steel (carbon steel), black micarta scales with a red micarta spacer. The upswept blade is similar to a fillet knife...or meat processing blade....only smaller. Its not thin like a fillet, so no flex. Just looks to me like it would be good for game processing. I could be wrong but for 12.99....Ill took a chance. This is my first RR knife, so not sure what to expect. This particular knife gets great reviews online. Trying to verify if its a "great" knife....or just a great "12.99" knife....if that made sense.

I like the looks of it. Especially the curvature of the handle. It looks like it would be helpful in skinning especially in tight places.
I`m just here for the girl`s wet teeshirt and mud wrestling contest.
